We went to see 'Blood Brothers' last night in Sheffield. Despite misgivings about the weather we decided to go for it. Tony had bought the tickets for last Saturday night but unfortunately I was ill and as we were unable to go the box office kindly allowed him to change them to Friday.
The show itself has had rave reviews. Neither of us had seen it nor did we know the story either so it was a completely new show to us.
Wow! What a treat! In a nutshell, a poor woman, Mrs Johnstone, a single mother abandoned by her husband, ( several children already with twins on the way), makes a deal with her employer to give her one of her twin boys at birth. Inevitably the boys paths cross over the years despite the best efforts of the 'adoptive' mother to keep them apart. Once grown the boys lives inevitably change, the poor one ends up in prison, his richer twin in a respectable job. Their love for the same woman comes between them and proves to be their downfall. I won't go into too much detail in case any of you want to see it for yourselves. All I will say is take some tissues with you, you will need them. Brilliant songs and a very enjoyable evening out.Definitely one to see again.
We stepped out of the theatre only to find the promised snow had arrived and not only that had settled, a good four inches or so. Not much by Canadian or North American standards but in UK definitely enough to cause traffic chaos. It took us 2 1/2hours to get home, a journey that would normally take about half an hour, forty minutes. I have never seen the M1 in such a state before, reduced in some places to only one lane. Tony was outwardly as cool as a cucumber but I don't mind telling you I was saying silent prayers all the way home. I have never been so glad as to set foot back in our little house I can tell you.
Tony is working all day today, I donned my lovely pink stripey wellies and have been for a walk to the local butcher's and paper shop and treated myself to a new magazine. I might even do a bit of sewing this afternoon if I can be bothered!
The forecasters have predicted a thaw and return to milder temperatures next week. I have noticed the days are getting longer now, only slightly but come 5 o'clock it is still just about light. I am always glad to see the back of January and feel slightly more optimistic that it won't be too much longer before spring is here.
Must dash now, Mr Blackbird is giving me the eye from the garden,' hey up Mrs, breakfast is late today!'
I'll check back in tomorrow to see what you are all up to. Anything nice?

I`ve seen blood brothers twice and love it. I also have the musical cd and know all the words.. how sad is that lol!
ReplyDeleteDx
Its not sad at all, the music is very catchy and worth listening to over and over.
DeleteI've seen Blood Brothers twice too! It is a great musical and the ending very heart wrenching. All the snow has disappeared overnight here and it's slowly getting back to normality, if that exists!
ReplyDeleteJune
I think the snow here is forecast to thaw overnight too. Thank good ness and lets hope we get no more!
DeleteOOH you have just reminded me that Blood Brothers should be on my bucket list, glad you had a great evening and arrived home safely in the snow.x

DeleteI saw Blood Brothers about 25 years ago. I see Marti Pellow was in your show. He is a fantastic singer. I went to see him in Jekyll and Hyde in 2011 and it was brillant. I still play my Wet,Wet Wet cd's.
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend.
I loved wet wet wet too!
DeleteI've never seen this show and it sounds fantastic. I must put it on my list of "things to do sooner rather than later". Sounds as if you had a horrific journey home. Jx
ReplyDeletedoesn't take much for chaos to ensue on our roads in the UK does it! At least the thaw has started! Hope you got some sewing done!!

It is so good to notice the return of the light, and that the days are becoming longer and lighter, isn't it :)
ReplyDeleteI have never seen Blood Brothers, but it sounds really nice. Your journey back home sounds horrible...
We have had lots of snow here today too, and more is forecast for tomorrow.
So glad you enjoyed the show and got home safely.
ReplyDeleteYour wellies sound adorable, and I like having an excuse to say "wellies", much more charming than "boots" which for you I believe is what we call the "trunk" of a car. :)
WOW I see also that Marti Pellow was in the show...What a lovely treat, Anne...Sounds fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you got home eventually!! safe and sound..Love Maria x
Lovely to have your review of the show, I saw Marti Pellow in The Witches of Eastwick some years ago and that was superb. I'd love to see Blood Brother though. Most of the snow has disappeared overnight here.
ReplyDeleteHi Anne, glad you're better. Me and my Mum have seen BB 4 times, 3 times with Linda Nolan as Mrs Johnstone. Love it, love it....I was in Knottingley Saturday night having a curry and it was a scary drive home in the Siberian snow!
