I find January to be the longest, most depressing month of the year. The births of two of my grandchildren aside I can't think of anything I actually like about it. The euphoria of Christmas and the lovely build up to it (my favourite part) gives way then to the bleak stretch ahead of us until spring arrives. I suggested to Tony earlier in the week that we maybe go to the East coast today and despite the fact the forecast was for snow showers, and many 'shall we? shan't we's? , we decided to go ahead anyway. I just love being beside the sea, one whiff of sea air and I feel totally exhilarated and full of life. We parked up on Scarborough's North bay and walked along the sea front down to the south beach , a fair walk but so lovely to wrap up warm and stroll along. I was amazed how many other people had decided to do exactly the same as us. Dog walkers aside( who are to be found in all weathers I suppose as needs must), there were families with small children and couples of all ages. It was cold as there had been a frost and by the look of it a small dusting of snow overnight but there was no breeze so it was lovely.
This sculpture is entitled ' Freddy Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers', made by artist Ray Lonsdale who became friends with Freddy Gilroy a man who was a soldier and one of the first to liberate the Bergen- Belsen concentration camp after the second world war. There is an information plaque at the side of it which goes into moving detail. It was bought for the residents and visitors of Scarborough by a long time resident herself.
Despite the cold we still enjoyed the obligatory ice cream on the sea front before heading back to the car where we had already decided to pop into York on our way back.
We parked at the Cliffords tower car park and made our way to Bettys for afternoon tea.
Did I ever mention we love cake?????
Such a lovely day, far too much to eat and we ended up bringing a doggy bag with leftovers back with us, but it certainly cheered up a cold January day.
Yesterday I decided to treat myself to a lovely new food mixer. I have managed to wear out several handmixers and thought I would invest in this one. I fell in love with them in a cookshop in New York 6 years ago and noticed that they are everywhere now. Not cheap, but hopefully it will last me a long time.
I can't wait to get baking with it!
How was your weekend?

I bet your family will be treated to marvelous baked goods now that you have that new mixer. These mixers sure make baking an easier task.
ReplyDeleteI love the water, I live about eight miles from Lake Michigan and enjoy walking along the shore line. It seems you and your husband enjoyed an awesome day.
What a lovely day out Anne. I love Scarborough - we haven't been since J's 50th birthday weekend last March. We had sunshine yesterday for the first time since well before Christmas! J's been working in the hallway this weekend and I've been listing on ebay - the decluttering continues and plans are afoot for a revamp of the attic room which won't cost a penny. I'll be so glad when the hallway's finished and then we can go to the seaside!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a lovely day out xxx
ReplyDeleteA lovely start to the day, a nice brisk walk by the sea and then a perfect ending with your delicious tea at Betty's, what a treat!

Sounds like a lovely day Anne. The cake looks good too. Enjoy your new toy. I treated myself to one a couple of years ago and love it.

Isn't Bettys fab? So wierd, I wrote a post with Bettys in it today! I'll publish it tomorrow... x
ReplyDeleteI love your mixer Anne, gorgeous - and just the colour I would pick too. I agree about January - though I am coping better than usual - it is a miserable month (apart from J's birthday -11 this month!)

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely day you've had! What could be better? Ah yes... Cakes!!
I too love your new mixer. I have admired them many times. I have serious mixer envy!
ReplyDeleteJune
I like your new mixer - it has a real retro style. Jx
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way you do about both January and the sea, and enjoyed a peek at your lovely day. I have never been to that part of England and would love to go one day. Have fun with your new mixer! Jen
ReplyDeleteWhat a great day out.

I agree January can be grey and depressing but you seem to of had a jolly day and we are almost half way through and then spring is around the corner. Xxx
ReplyDeleteWe've had a bit of a nothing kind of day today, maybe next weekend we should take a trip out to the coast (we often go to Hornsea and Bridlington), weather permitting! Your new mixer looks fab. xx
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more, I always feel 'quiet' at this time of year and all the grey weather made me feel grey too. At least we had a little sun this week. Great idea to blow the cobwebs away with a visit to Scarborough, glad you had such a good day. Fabulous mixer!
ReplyDeleteCarol xx
I bet the walk blew the cobwebs away.
ReplyDeleteOne day I will visit Scarborough, and the surrounding area.
Enjoy making cakes with your new mixer

I'm with you on the January thing. There is nothing like a walk by the sea to cheer you up.
ReplyDeleteAh, Scarborough. I had around 5 consecutive holidays there as an early teen. I loved the North Bay beach and loved the now defunct open air theatre. Also, there was the (still on) battleships on the lake and the island in the middle had fairy tales on it which you could walk around at night (no longer there).
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely day, I can't think of anything nicer than a stroll along the prom followed by tea at Betty's. Can't wait to see what you whip up in your new mixer, I bet the family will be well fed.
ReplyDeleteyour new mixer looks fab, I've always admired them. One day maybe I'll own one. Amanda x
ReplyDeleteI love the sea at any time of the year. Looks like you had a great day out.
ReplyDeleteHi Anne, These days are the best to beat the January blues...
ReplyDeleteWe are half way through now! LOVE your new food mixer, really do!
Love Maria x
Looks like you had a lovely day at the seaside. I have wonderful memories of Scarborough and I remember enjoying looking round the castle. I lived in Bridlington for a short while so we used to go to Scarborough for the day. Love your new mixer! Maggie xx
ReplyDeleteI bought a mixer a few years ago and love it. It is wonderful to make homemade baked goods and even bread. When we were in England, we visited Scarborough and York but we missed having a lovely tea.
ReplyDeleteNothing beats a walk by the sea on a cold winter's day, especially if it's followed by a wonderful tea! M x
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful sculpture with a great story behind it. I treated myself to a similar piece of kitchen equipment last year, but I keep turning to my trusty food processor. However the Kitchenaid makes brilliant meringues and a Pavlova to die for.
